It was a perfectly typical day in central city, if anything was ever typical about this place. The golden sun warmed my skin as I stepped off the overly air conditioned hover craft. It’s been over 6 Weeks since I’ve smelled this air it was like raspberries and good wine. I’d just arrived back from a “mental health” vacation prescribed my parents. Well it was less of a vacation and more of a way to get rid of an opinionated and somewhat irate 19 old daughter that was slowly poisoning their political career. So they sent me Corma . My family owned a villa there. It was at the southern end of continent and beautiful this time of year. It was fun I did nothing but eat and sleep for two months. But now there was nothing more I wanted to but see my favorite person in all of Atlantis, Quami. He was 22, a junior captain of the republic guard. And the Cutest boy in all of central city. But I didn’t like him for any of that, I liked him because he treated me like a princess without treating like I was royalty if that makes sense. I felt normal around Quami. I didn’t feel like I was ever too intense, to forward, or vulgar. And I definitely didn’t feel like the president and Magistrate’s daughter! But I still felt special around him. But if my parents ever found out we were seeing each other privately they’d kill him.
He lived in the guard encampments to the west of presidential housing quarters. Far enough from my parent not be notice, still close enough to run home. I knew my father would be furious if he knew I was walking the streets without an escort but I never cared for an entourage. Still I headed straight for Quami’s place. He stayed in a royal grotto that had fallen out of use, I loved it because it was just outside of the guard encampment so no one ever knew I was there. It was quaint, damp but quaint he had somehow managed to get the water in the fountains and hot tub running. We’d lounge around, talking shit about government officials, and politics, new things we had read, my parents, his parents.
Evening had just began to fall and the night patrol crafts had just launched. So Quami would be in his quarters.
“Quami!” I called out my words echoed back with no answer. “Mm maybe he had to work late or else —”
a familiar pair of arms wrapped themselves around me from behind giving my stomach a tickle.
“Stop it you jerk! I laughed as I knocked the hands away.
“Relax Arii I just wanted to surprise you. I missed you.” I hated that he could disarm me so easily.
I slid back hopping over the long sofa overlooking the hot tub. Stretching my legs over the back of it looking up at him smiling. “Have anything to drink captain?”
He looked at me narrowing his eyes “How was rehab? And don’t call that! “
“It wasn’t rehab it was a vacation, pour me some of that purple stuff and I’ll tell you all about it.”
“How do you vacation in paradise?” he asked innocently.
I didn’t have answer I just knocked back the purple drink once he put it in my hand. “Why did you think I was in rehab….? Oh wait the daughter of the president and the magistrate empathizing with humans and condemning war and slavery. She must be on drugs! Is that what they’re saying?”
“No! …. well yes, but not many believe it”
“What do you mean it doesn’t matter? You threw an entire bottle of wine at a congressmen’s head and called him a hog at a formal dinner. And it doesn’t matter? You’re funny.”
“Alright maybe I shouldn’t have thrown the bottle at him but he is a hog. I mean just the thought of them reprogramming all the humans to shorten their life span because he thinks they know too much! That’s sick.” I said pouring another glass for myself.
“We are at war Arii.”
“Not here! Earth is neutral territory, it has been for thousands for years. Why bring that crap here.”
“Well I hate to be the one to tell you this but, things have advanced since you’ve been gone. Congressmen Bolhi got his way. The republic voted two weeks ago reprogram the human life span from 500 to 120 years” Quami almost whispered as he looked away from me.
“What! That’s Monstrous” I screamed. “They can’t do that! Why would they do that?”
“Well right after you left the Senate got some intelligence that some humans had learned to use power crystals and crystalline magic.”
“They can do that?” I almost didn’t believe the words when I said them.
“They can. Well some of them can the ones engineered by the Alkali can, maybe more. But it was agreed that we don’t need a third party in this war.”
“This is insane, this can’t happen, I’m going to my mother and —”
“No! Trust me I know how you feel but its better this way. At least for the time being. Besides it’s not their war why make them suffer with us.”
“Who’s suffering here? Look around you said yourself this is paradise. Killing them off in a systematic way is better?”
“Believe it or not that’s what your mother said to Congress. But don’t say anything about it to your parents, play dumb. Plus you’re drunk.”
“I am not… ” Okay I was a little drunk, I wonder what that purple stuff was. “I have to do something.” I said.
“Ugh… Have you ever heard of the human hybridization project? “Quami sighed.
“The Thing were those engineers were trying to make light bodies for humans so they could survive in the outer universe?”
“But I thought it was de-funded because their spirit frequency was too low to pull into the outer space matrix.”
“Yes but what if there was a way to raise their frequency. Then it wouldn’t matter how long they lived in this dimension. “
“Quami what are you talking about? “
“Meet me tomorrow Tal Lake after my shift. Don’t tell anyone where you’re going.”
"Do I ever?"
